Boris Labbé
Born in 1987 in France
Lives and works in south-west France
He studied at the École supérieure d’art des Pyrénées, Tarbes site, then at the École de cinéma d’animation d’Angoulême until 2011. The artist then took up several residencies: Casa de Velázquez in Madrid, HEAR – Haute école des arts du Rhin in Strasbourg, CICLIC – Région Centre-Val de Loire in Vendôme, VIDEOFORMES residency in Yssingeaux, Tenjinyama Art Studio in Sapporo, the Q21 program at MuseumsQuartier in Vienna, and the animation residency at Cinémathèque Québécoise in Montreal.
His work has been shown at contemporary art exhibitions in France and abroad (Japan, USA, Canada, Spain, Croatia); screened at over three hundred international film festivals (including Cannes, Clermont-Ferrand, Annecy, Ottawa, Toronto, Hiroshima…); broadcast on television (France 2, Numéro 23, Movistar+); or performed in audiovisual concerts (with the Orchestre National de Lyon, the Ensemble Intercontemporain, the Orchestre des Pays de Savoie). In 2020, he collaborated with choreographer Angelin Preljocaj, designing the video scenography for Swan Lake.
Since 2014, he has been collaborating with Sacrebleu Productions on his film work. He is also represented by re.riddle gallery (San Francisco) and Miyu gallery (Paris). More recently, he has collaborated with Bandini Films and VIDEOFORMES to flesh out the Monade project (2020).
His films and video installations have received some fifty awards and distinctions around the world, including the Grand Prix at the Taichung International Animation Festival in Taiwan; the Grand Prix at Curtas Vila do Conde in Portugal; the Prix Fipresci at the Annecy Festival; the Grand Prix at Animafest Zagreb; the Lagardère Foundation’s Auteur de film d’animation grant; the Golden Nica Animation at the Ars Electronica Festival in Linz; and the Grand Prix at the Japan Media Arts Festival in Tokyo.
His latest short film La Chute was in the Special Screening selection at the 57th Critics’ Week of the 2018 Cannes Film Festival.
