Press release
Galerie Les filles du calvaire presents Jardin des souffles, the first solo exhibition by artist Karine Rougier, from March 7 to April 19, 2025.
The exhibition brings together a variety of works, including tempera paintings on resin (created from fragments of shipwrecks found in the Mediterranean), drawings on handmade paper, a bronze sculpture, a mural intervention and several films on film.
Rougier’s inspiration comes from the beauty of nature, his underwater explorations and poets such as Forough Farrokhzad and Etel Adnan, as well as the mystical songs of Saint Hildegard of Bingen. Between dream and hope, his work explores the profound links between the human, nature and the spiritual, while proposing a vision of repair and celebration of the world.
The artist takes a dreamlike approach to a world in crisis, expressing an energy of resilience and harmony. Through her works, she celebrates life in all its forms, interwoven in a symbolic dialogue where humans, animals, minerals and plants merge. Among the major pieces, the bronze sculpture Cordon de têtes reinterprets a Hindu symbol, offering a tribute to ancestors and significant encounters.
Karine Rougier, born in Malta in 1982, lives and works in Marseille. She was the winner of the Drawing Now Prize in 2022 and represented Malta at the Venice Biennale in 2017. Jardin des souffles is an invitation to contemplate a world where the force of life connects us to a restorative, poetic universe.
