“In the Minas Gerais region, the opulent patriarch Oswaldo Wallace runs his mines with authority. His two sons, Severino and Ramires, are only a year apart, but they have nothing in common: the former, committed to the left, went on to become a journalist and writer, while the latter supported the military, which exercised authoritarian power during the “years of lead” – “chumbo”, in Portuguese. Inspired by his family history, Matthias Lehmann’s graphic novel is a great saga, where characters and destinies cross and recross. With inventive compositions that borrow from caricature, advertising and Brazilian graphic design, the author blends intimate stories with the great history of a fascinating country.”
Chumbo, Matthias Lehmann’s new graphic novel. This year’s masterpiece: a Brazilian fresco spanning more than 60 years.
