Tania Mouraud

Born in 1942 in Paris, France

Lives and works in Colombiers, France

“Through my work, I show that philosophy and art should and could merge to advance us on the path to knowledge.

A key figure on the French art scene and an unclassifiable artist, Tania Mouraud refuses to be associated with any particular movement or dogma. Since the late 1960s, Tania Mouraud’s work has been part of a practice that questions the relationship between art and social ties, using a variety of media: painting, installation, photography, sound, video, performance and more.

In 2015, the Centre Pompidou Metz devoted a retrospective monographic exhibition to him.

In 2024, Tania Mouraud was elected to the Académie des Beaux-Arts in the painting section.

Since the end of the 1960s, Tania Mouraud’s work has been part of a practice that questions the relationship between art and social links, using a variety of media: painting, installation, photography, sound, video, performance, etc.
She proposes adding a meditation room to our standard apartments (1968). On 3 x 4 m panels in public spaces, she displays her disagreement with a society that glorifies possession at the expense of humanity (1977). She reflects on the decorative relationship between art and war, and on the limits of perception with the help of writing, creating “form words” (1989). Since 1998, she has been using photography, video and sound, in close relation to painting, to question various aspects of history and the living.
