Etel Adnan

Etel Adnan was born in 1925 in Beirut, Lebanon. She died on November 14, 2021 in Paris. A Lebanese-American artist, poet and essayist, she wrote in English and French. She has been painting since the 1960s, and her work has received international recognition since Documenta13, in 2012.

In 2014, she was invited to the Whitney Museum Biennial (New York) and Qatar’s museum of modern art, the Mathaf, devoted a retrospective to her, curated by Hans Ulrich Obrist. Since then, numerous museums (Berne, Luxembourg, San Francisco, Aspen, Lille…) and art centers have devoted exhibitions to her.

Adnan’s works can be found in numerous collections, including MNAM-Centre Pompidou, Paris; Mathaf, Doha, Qatar; MoMA, New York; M+, Hong Kong; Royal Jordanian Museum, Amman; Musée d’Art Moderne, Tunis; Sursock Museum, Beirut; Institut du Monde Arabe, Paris; British Museum, London; Tate Gallery, London; World Bank Collection, Washington D. C.; National Museum for Women in the Arts, Washington D. C.; and numerous private collections. C.; National Museum for Women in the Arts, Washington D.C.; as well as in numerous private collections.
